Lesson 2 Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention

Novelty
Novelty is a patentability requirement. An invention is not patentable if the claimed subject matter was disclosed before the date of filing, or before the date of priority if a priority is claimed, of the patent application.

Novelty is the quality of being new. Although it may be said to have an objective dimension (e.g : a new style of art coming into being, such as abstract art or impressionism ) it essentially exists in the subjective perceptions of individuals. It also refers to something novel, that which is striking, original or unusual. The term can have pejorative sense and refer to a mere innovation.

Creativity
Creativity as the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality. Creativity involves two processes:
thinking, then producing. Innovation is the production or implementation of an idea. If you have ideas, but
don't act on them, you are imaginative but not creative. ~By Linda Naiman

Creativity is the process of bringing something new into being...creativity requires passion and commitment. Out of the creative act is born symbols and myths. It brings to our awareness what was
previously hidden and points to new life. The experience is one of heightened consciousness-ecstasy.
~ By Rollo May, The Courage to Create

Creativity refers to the phenomenon whereby something new is created which has some kind of value.
What counts as "new" may be in reference to the individual creator, or to the society or domain within
which the novelty occurs. What counts as "valuable" is similarly defined in a variety of ways. Scholarly
interest in creativity ranges widely: the mental and neurological processes associated with creative activity;
the relationship between personality type and creative ability; the relationship between creativity

and intelligence, learning and mental health; and ways of fostering creativity through training and
technology.

Innovation
Innovation is the specific instrument of entrepreneurship... the act that endows resources with a new capacity to create wealth. ~By Peter Drucker

Innovation is invention plus introduction, and it is increasingly seen as crucial for economies and governments alike. Expanding economies no longer produce more of the same products, but rather ever more new products with additional value. David Nordfors is co-founder and executive director of the VINNOVA-Stanford Research Center of Innovation Journalism at Stanford University. ~By David Nordfors

Innovation comes from the Latin innovātus which means to renew. Innovation can therefore be seen as the process that renews something that exists and not, as is commonly assumed, the introduction of something new.
Invention
An invention is a new composition, device, or process. An invention may be derived from a pre-existing model or idea, or it could be independently conceived in which case it may be a radical breakthrough. In addition, there is cultural invention, which is an innovative set of useful social behaviors adopted by people and passed on to others. Inventions often extend the boundaries of human knowledge or experience. An invention that is novel and not obvious to others skilled in the same field may be able to obtain the legal protection of a patent.
Inventions are easy to define but can be difficult to recognize. An invention is "the discovery or creation
of a new material (either a new manufactured product or a new composition or matter), a new process, a
new use for an existing material, or any improvements of any of these."

Lesson 1 Defining Creativity

What is creativity.
Something new and innovation that to define and to define the meaning of the word creativity and one of the definition being explored is the generation of new ideas.

Myth of creativity:
1) Only special talented people are creative.
- I am totally disagree with this. I think if you decide to put on an effort and your passion into something, I am sure you will be creative as well.
2) Being creative is hard.
- Everything in the world are hard to achieve as long as we don not give up and tend to continue our journey even though it is full of brambles. Try to learn in failed.
3) Problems are in our life to make it more difficult.
- We face problem everyday, we can't ran away from problems. Eg : If we are not sad, how can we feel hopeless.
4) I am not creative.
- A very mistaken sense. Everyone of us are creative throughout our daily life.
5) Innovation in the domain of genius.
- Everyone can invent new things everyday. Eg : Our hairstyle, the way we wear our attire.
6) I have to have brand new ideas in order for me to be considered creative.
- We have to combine all ideas and juxtapose them.
7) Brainstorming is hard work.
- This will be happen during grouping discussion, something that we do not plan to do but there will be some creative and unpredictable ideas that appear at the moment.
8) Only artists need to be creative.
- Everyone have to be creative to show our personal character in our life, although it may be tasteless and meaningless.
9) Writer's block is a greater obtacle in the creative process.
- Go around and observe at the things, we must refer, as if there is no input, how can we get output? So, we have to refer others to bring and create ideas.
10) Using structured creative techniques will hinder my ability to be creative.
- As a human being, we have our limit to create something, so we need some techniques to help us and to improve our works to become better.

What is creative???

This was the first question that lecturer asked when we first entered the 'Creative Studies' class.

What I found on dictionary is:
the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, or the like, and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations, etc.; originality, progressiveness, or imagination: the need for creativity inmodern industry; creativity in the performing arts.

The objective of this class is to develop student's ability to identify an issue or topic and from that carry out appropriate research, analysis and idea synthesis that will result in a unique, personal statement.

So, what will be the learning outcome???

Upon successful completion of this module or lesson, students will be able to have a throughout understanding of the research and thinking (divergent and convergent) processes that go into any art and design project. Besides, we can demonstrate and understanding of problem solving, through the lateral thinking and "mind mapping" method and techniques.

Between, what is the difference of inventing and innovation???

Actually, there is much dissimilarity between inventing and innovation. Innovation relates to novelty and modernization whereas invention relates to creation of something new. Innovation leads to creativity and this can be applied to various aspects of life, right from industries to personal management. If we take the case of invention – companies are patenting their inventions for one reason, which is to prevent the misuse of their idea. Some people actually innovate and make efforts to achieve their dreams. These dreams when turned into reality had huge impact on the world. Hence, they should be given the due credit and people who are behind them should be able to capitalize on it. It was their innovations which led to the inventions, which were then patented. As a conclusion, innovation relates to novelty and modernization whereas invention relates to creation of something new. Innovation is invention plus exploitation. Invention's concern is a singular product or process, but innovation involves an amalgamation of various products or processes.

Innovation is far more about prospecting, mining, refining and adding value than it is about pure invention. By~William Buxton

We use our brain to think !

Obviously, we use our brain to think, our brain control the whole body parts to function. What we think in our mind may affect us to do in our daily life. The structure and functions of the mind suggests that the two different sides of the brain control two different 'modes' of thinking. It also suggests that each of us prefers one mode over the other. Experimentation has shown that the two different sides, or hemispheres, of the brain are responsible for different manners of thinking. The following illustrates the differences between left brain and right brain thinking :

JUXTAPOSITION ???

Simply stated, juxtaposition means placing things side-by-side. In art, this usually is done with the intention of bringing out a specific quality or creating an effect, particularly when two contrasting or opposing elements are used. The viewer's attention is drawn to the similarities or differences between the elements.
